2015 KABA 22nd Annual Banquet
On October 3, 2015, the Korean American Bar Association of Chicago (“KABA”) hosted its 22nd Annual Banquet at the Union League Club of Chicago, featuring keynote speaker Christopher Kang, National Director of the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans and former Deputy Counsel to President Barack Obama.
In his keynote, Christopher Kang described how his experiences, including growing up as a Korean-American in a small Midwest town with parents who were both public servants, led him to the Office of White House Counsel and eventually to the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans. Noting that Asian Americans are the fastest-growing minority population in the United States, Mr. Kang encouraged the attendees to help shape the country’s future by participating more consistently in the voting process.
Co-Vice President David Kim awarded KABA’s Distinguished Community Leader Award to David Namkung, Managing Partner of Clarity Partners. Susan Lee, Associate at Dykema, firm sponsor of the KABA 2015 Diversity Scholarship, awarded scholarships to Sukbae (David) Gong, a 3L at Northwestern University School of Law, and Jonathan Kim, a 1L at the University of Illinois College of Law.
The Banquet drew more than 130 guests from the legal, business, and non-profit communities, including the leaders of other bar associations and Korean-American community groups. Dennis C. Lee, President of KABA, applauded the successes of its members in the past year, including the institution of KABA’s Women’s Network, continuation of its mentorship program, and partnerships with other bar organizations on various initiatives throughout the year.
Special guests included the Deputy Consul General of the Republic of Korea, Hon. Jae Woong Lee, the Chief Judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Hon. Ruben Castillo, and judges from the Circuit Court of Cook County, including Hon. Israel Desierto, Hon. Rena Van Tine, Hon. Jessica O’Brien, and Hon. Arthur Wheatley. Ji Suk Yi, the news and social media producer on Windy City LIVE, served as the Mistress of Ceremonies, and Dhaea, a singer-songwriter from Chicago and winner of Kollaboration Chicago’s 2015 showcase, performed during the program.
