2014 Recipients of the Distinguished Service Award and Community Partner Award

On October 25, 2014, the Korean American Bar Association of Chicago (“KABA”) will host its 21st Annual Banquet and Installation at the Union League Club in downtown Chicago. Polsinelli PC is the Lead Sponsor of this year’s event, which consistently draws upwards of 200 guests including federal judges, law firm associates and partners, in-house counsel, government representatives, and business and community leaders. The 2014 Annual Banquet’s keynote speaker is actor and director Charles S. (“C.S.”) Lee, best known for his role as Vince Masuka from the Showtime series Dexter. This year’s event will also include live entertainment, a silent auction, and presentation of the following awards and scholarships.

Jenner & Block will receive the Distinguished Service Award for its pro bono work in the highlypublicized murder trial of Hyungseok Koh.  Mr. Koh was charged with the first-degree murder of his 22-year-old son, Paul Koh.  Aftera 13-day trial, Mr. Koh was found not guilty.  Jenner & Block’s legal team was able to show the jury that Mr. Koh, a South Korean native, did not understand either the interrogation process or the questions clearly because of language difficulties.  In addition, the team presented evidence that Paul Koh had a history of mental illness, and argued that there was no physical evidence to convict Mr. Koh and that his son’s death was a suicide.  KABA recognizes Jenner & Block for its outstanding and successful pro bono contribution.

KAN-WIN will be this year’s recipient of the Community Partner Award. Founded in 1990, KAN-WIN is a Chicago-based organization with a mission to eradicate violence against women and to empower victims of domestic abuse in the Asian American community and to advance social justice. Resources offered by KAN-WIN include access to support groups, counseling, a 24-hour hotline, transitional housing, children’s programs, economic empowerment program, sexual assault programs, and legal advocacy. In August, KAN-WIN partnered with the Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women’s Network and Rape Victim advocates to organize a rally in downtown Chicago to call for restoration of justice to “comfort women” survivors. KABA honors KAN-WIN for its continued dedication and work with the Asian American community.

KABA, with the generous support of Dykema Gossett PLLC, will award two scholarships to Chicago-area law school students. KABA’s Diversity Scholarship Program was created to encourage successful academic and professional endeavors of current law school students and awards two scholarships, each in the amount of $1,000, to assist qualified law school students with their academic expenses.

KABA wishes to thank our 2013-2014 sponsors:
